Luna Sighting

Okay, so even though we live in a huge world capital and supposedly a couple of blocks away from Mexico's Rodeo Drive, I haven't seen a lot of celebrities. Probably that is because I don't know how to read Hola magazine. But last week we ran into someone famous and I even got an autograph.

Remember "Y Tu Mama Tambien"?

Sergio says it is one of his favorite movies, and I clearly remember going to see it on my first trip to Austin, Texas when I was having a looksy at the Law School. I was one of like four people at the noon showing at the Dobie. I adored it, of course. Best teenager movie ever. And a total highlight of my Law School preview weekend (so much nicer than the Red River tour of student housing...)

Well, guess what? Sergio grabbed me at my desk last week to introduce me to Diego Luna! Tenoch, the Rich Kid, from the film?

So that was a pretty fun day at work (Sergio reports that Diego is pretty much exactly like most of the characters he plays in the movies: a shrugging, mumbly-mouthed charmer). We found out that young Mr. Luna is working on a movie about Harvey Milk with Gus Van Sant. Which sounds cool, but even cooler is that he is playing one of Milk's boyfriends. And guess who is playing Mayor (of Castro Street) Milk? Sean Penn. Enough said.

Sidenote: Guess who is our collective first and best movie star sighting ever? Sean Penn himself, spotted smoking a cigarette on the street one early morning during our trip to visit Cousin Paul in San Francisco. We were way too chicken to take a photo or ask for an autograph from that guy...

Overall, we're a little movie nuts this week because apparently all the big English language oscar nominees are finally here in the theaters. We saw No Country for Old Men last night and it was super. Javier Bardem makes for one excellent bad guy and we especially enjoyed all the spooky Texas landscape stuff. We're already eagerly planning our next trip to the movies to see There Will Be Blood which arrives here in a week or so. Good grief, this is one macho movie season...

nice!

can't wait to hear what you think of 'there will be blood' - do tell.

also, have you seen the dylan show yet? we just watched the scorcese PBS special called 'no direction home' and we're on a dylan kick (again). unfortunately, we are in the american boonies and 'I'm not there' has not (and probably will never) come to davis - but i heard it was incredible.

enjoy the movies!

That is awesome! We've been seeing them shooting that Harvey Milk movie here in SF. Our friend Erika lives on Castro street, Sean Penn was hanging out at the bottom of her stairs.

My coworker was an extra last weekend - he supplied his own period costume, which consisted of sideburns and flared white jeans. The same costume he wears in the office, as a matter of fact. Probably much like Sergio.
